Now in its 18th year, the contest is an extraordinary opportunity for aspiring writers to have their original songs heard and judged by a panel of Nashville music industry professionals, under the direction of this year’s volunteer contest chairperson, Grammy®-winning singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale.

Buddy Miller Pulls Near-Sweep Of Major Categories

(September 17, 2009) – Acclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer Buddy Miller was the biggest winner at the 8th Annual Americana Music Association Honors & Awards Show Thursday night at the Ryman Auditorium, taking home trophies in almost every category for which he was nominated.
Performing in celebration of lifetime achievement awards were John Fogerty, Ray Benson and Asleep At The Wheel, and Sam Bush. John Prine and Nanci Griffith sang a duet in honor of recipient Jim Rooney. The AMA’s annual awards show, hosted by Jim Lauderdale, was also a showcase for both established artists and the next generation of stars, all contributing fresh material to the Americana music scene. Performers included Rodney Crowell, The Gourds, Raul Malo, The Flatlanders, Reckless Kelly.

Elvis Costello‘s New Album Secret, Profane and Sugarcane
The record was produced by T Bone Burnett and recorded by Mike Piersante during a three-day session at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studio.
Joining Costello were Jerry Douglas (dobro), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mike Compton (mandolin), Jeff Taylor (accordion) and Dennis Crouch (double bass), some of the most highly regarded recording artists and musicians in traditional American country music, Bluegrass and beyond.
Several of these songs, including “Down Among The Wines and Spirits”, were given their first public performances during Costello’s acclaimed solo appearances as part of “The Bob Dylan Show” in late 2007.
The album includes ten previously unrecorded songs. “Sulphur to Sugarcane” and “The Crooked Line”, were co-written with T Bone Burnett while, “I Felt The Chill” marks Costello’s second recorded songwriting collaboration with Loretta Lynn.
Costello revisits two songs from his catalogue in string band style. Both songs were originally written for Johnny Cash. “Hidden Shame” was indeed included on Cash’s album, Boom Chicka Boom
The album title makes reference to “The Secret Songs”, Costello’s unfinished commission for the Royal Danish Opera about the life of Hans Christian Andersen.
Seeking a new connection from the author to the Anglophone world, Costello wrote about the Andersen’s relationship with the world famous singer, Jenny Lind in “She Handed Me A Mirror” and “How Deep Is The Red”.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2009 Roots and Music Festival at The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. The Festival will celebrate the heritage and traditional music of our mountains as well as contemporary acts in the Bluegrass, Folk, and Americana genres. Tickets are $18 on Friday, $27 on Saturday and $40 for a 2-Day pass. Advance 2-Day tickets are $36 until May 15th. The Festival also provides an informal Picking Pavilion throughout the weekend.
The Festival line-up includes top local, regional and national acts. On Friday, June 5th at 6 PM catch Buck and Nelson, Irons In The Fire, 2007 and 2008 IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year Dale Ann Bradley and legendary Progressive Bluegrass pioneers The Seldom Scene.

The contest recognizes winners in four categories–country, bluegrass, gospel and general. First place winners in each category receive: a performance on the Cabin Stage at MerleFest 2009 (April 23-26), an acoustic guitar, a check for $300, two boxes of D’Addario strings and a one-year subscription to Acoustic Guitar magazine. Second and third place winners in each category receive performance slots on the Friday night Songwriters Coffeehouse, as well as cash prizes, D’Addario strings and Acoustic Guitar subscriptions.
