Annual gathering of global music with New Mexican flavor a Southwest destination

First artists announced; Early bird tickets on sale now

Albuquerque, NM (April 16, 2009) –  Albuquerque will once again be dancing to the rhythms of world music’s brightest stars this September!   ¡Globalquerque!, New Mexico’s 5th Annual Celebration of World Music and Culture, will take place September 25 and 26, 2009 at the beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) located on the banks of the Rio Grande.

Called a “Top Ten End of Summer Destination Event” by The Los Angeles Times, ¡Globalquerque! has quickly made its mark as a unique event in the Rocky Mountain/Southwest region, and is one of America’s fastest-growing world music festivals.

The festival’s first confirmed artists demonstrate ¡Globalquerque!’s goals of bringing fresh, frontline musicians from across the globe.  Väsen with Darol Anger and Mike Marshall is an exciting new collaboration between Sweden’s premier folk group and America’s virtuosic acoustic duo, forging Appalachian fiddle tunes with the nyckelharpa & polskas of Sweden.  The frisky band Little Cow, named for frontman László Kollár’s popular animations, churns Balkan, Romani (gypsy), ska and rock into a poetic pop, high-energy mix. Indian Ocean is a visionary ensemble from India that fuses contemporary elements with improvisational Indian classical music.

Many more musicians will be named in the coming months.

The festival will this year be developing its green field site (adjacent to its campsite and main venue at the Leisure Complex) in the Festival Village, in the shadow of the stunning Beverley Minster, to offer even more events for families and all age groups, with a broad mix of interests.

The popular TCT Sessions will once again be being held in the Wold Top Tent, in the Festival Village, between noon and 7pm both Saturday 20th and Sunday 21 June. The sessions were introduced to the festival program three years ago and are hosted by the organiser of Hunsley Acoustic Music sessions, Will Richardson. Will, a long time supporter of both the Trust and the Festival, was invited to host the sessions in aid of the charity and since 2007 and there has never been a shortage of musicians to take to the stage and entertain the happy crowds! US Tour set for August and September

(Los Angeles, CA) — This summer, Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal – two leading lights of modern blues – are joining forces for their first-ever tour together. The “BonTaj Roulet” tour will be a coast-to-coast, 30-date outing in August and September, including appearances at such celebrated venues as Wolf Trap, Ravinia, Red Rocks, and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. These shows will feature Bonnie and Taj on stage alone and together. Bonnie, backed by her always-dazzling group, and Taj, with the six-piece, Grammy-winning Phantom Blues Band, will play full sets separately, before closing each night with a collaborative, blow-out performance.

“This tour is just what the doctor ordered,” says Bonnie. “Taj and I have so much in common, but there’s so much unexplored territory between us. It’s been a long time coming, and now is the right time.”

“We’ve been like ships passing in the night,” adds Taj. “Some of my musicians used to play with Bonnie, we have so many of the same friends-this is really an opportunity to combine some forces and play some great music.”
