27 July 1969 and Fairport Convention were at the height of their fame. An unlikely single, “Si Tu Dois Patir” (a French language cover of the Bob Dylan song “If You-ve Gotta Go, Go Now”), from the album Unhalfbricking, hit the charts and launched Fairport onto Top of the Pops.
The single included percussion from smashing glass bottles to breaking wicker chairs but most importantly it included Sandy Denny’s beautiful voice.
Jump forward 40 years to find a young singer, inspired by Sandy Denny and the groundbreaking work of Fairport Convention, with a voice “…so close to Sandy Denny’s perfection that it is difficult to discern the gap” — Rock n Reel
A groundbreaker herself, Ruth Notman‘s debut album Threads was “One of the most assured, varied and Impressive Debuts” according to The Guardian. With a diverse mix of traditional material, her own song writing and some well chosen covers (including Richard Thompson’s “Farewell Farewell”), Threads launched Ruth onto the music world with airplay on BBC Radio 2 and 3, a live session on the Bob Harris show, wide critical acclaim including Album of the Week in The Independent and a whole raft of major festival gigs.
So 40 years to the day that Fairport Convention’s “Si Tu Dois Partir” charted, Ruth releases her tribute to that groundbreaking single. Taken from her forthcoming album, The Life of Lilly (due for release in September), the single is a classic summer anthem. Bright sounds and great production blend beautifully to create the perfect accompaniment for Ruth’s unique voice.
Already very well received by 2 of the original Fairport line up from the 69 version.
“It’s smashing; everyone has done a great job” — Ashley Hutchings
“Excellent, Smiley and joyful” — Simon Nicol
“Si Tu Dois Partir” is the summer song for all eras. From 69 to 2009!
